Bambaata was throwing parties in the Bronx, before
Prince Whipper Whip was rocking with the Fantastic 5
and before the Rock Steady Crew ever attempted their
first windmills, Umar Bin Hassan and the Last Poets
were making rhythm and poetry live on the streets of
Harlem.
Thirty years later a number of the more socially and
politically conscious emcees are planning a tribute
album to the Last Poets featuring Common, Dead
Prez, Chuck D, Keith Murray, Buckshot, Kanye West,
Erykah Badu and others.
Since 1999, Brooklyn Producer/DJ Dub Gabriel and Last
Poets’s founder Umar Bin Hassan have collaborated in
many ways.
First with Umar’s now legendary appearance on Dub
Gabriel’s Baraka Orchestra album, Then with Dub
Gabriel and Prof. Shehab releasing Umar’s album
produced by Bill Laswell. Gabriel’s Current album
“Bass Jihad” is a modern Middle Eastern Dub
masterpiece being compared by Billboard magazine to
Brian Eno as well as on the best of 2005 list from
many magazines and radio stations from around the
world.
The night will be a celebration of not only the return
meeting of these two artist, but also it will be the
first time Dub Gabriel is in New York since moving to
Berlin Germany 8 months ago.
This legendary night will feature Dub Gabriel\s
Brooklyn Massive soundsystem doing all live dubbing
and music creating. as well as Trumpet maestro Satish

What I need is for you to stop in at Pyramid this Wednesday for a drink or 2 PARTICILARLY early in the night, even if just for half an hour. Come before you go out or go home…whatever.

Lupe Loop, as the name implies, has a heavy stash of latin in her crates, but also underground disco, 70’s am gold, and whatever else she feels like dropping. Spinning 12:15-1:30

DJ Misbehavoir

A London transplant who’s been in NYC for more than a minute now, and been behind the decks for years, promoting underground sounds, lost album sides as opposed to the hit single, and has a policy of ‘no sheep’…i.e. mofos who can think for themselves instead of letting radio tell them what they like. From white label UK hip hop, classic dancehall, roller disco and beyond, this girl has it. Spinning 1:30-2:45

DJ Shakey

What can I say…some of you know but some don’t, but me and Ms. Shakey have been ‘hanging’ for quite some time, and she’s been a huge influence not only musically but as a person, one of the more fearless ladies I know, and a inspiration for this party. And she has a ton of records in every conceivable genre. Spinning 2:45-4.

DJ Sims

Sims runs one of my favorite weeklies, ‘Popular Corner’, that features guests every week, and a flyer to go with it. Sims, through her flyers and ‘yearbook’ has been documenting the downtown NYC DJ scene, and I applaud her for that. Her last mix features everything form Art Ensemble of Chicago to Styles of Beyond. Spinning 4am on.

I’ve know Shel aka klevervice for quite some time…she and I threw the 1st Golf party, which was 18 DJs spinning all styles of music in her old loft. Currently doing the Friday Bunker party with Spinoza at Sub-Tonic and extremely eclectic on the decks. Spinning 10:30-12:15.

Justine D:

One of the mofos behind Motherfucker, an amazing multi-room party where you can actually here punk rock played on large soundsystem with 1000’s of freaky folks getting down, plus underground electro, soul and funk and whatever…upbeat music for downtown kids. It’s a NYC institution at this point, and we’re very happy to have Justine represent with some rawk and roll and beyond. Spinning 12:15-1:30.

Rekha:

Rekha represents another bad ass long running party: Basement Bhangra. Dope dope party and another NYC institution, these are the things keeping NYC New York fucking City and not Starbucksville. She’s been in it to win it long before Jay Z teamed up with Punjabi MC and will be there long after. Underground east asian sounds and way beyond. Spinning 1:30-2:45.

Sara Walker aka Doomer:

I met Sara a zillion years ago when she worked for Subharmonic and hit me off with some Painkiller CDs (dark John Zorn death metal jazz shit.) Over the past decade I’ve seen and heard her at various DnB and breaks parties around the city (she is a resident at Direct Drive and Statik). Sara is a flawless mixer and one of the sweetest girls I know who plays some of the illest shit out there…aside from my girl of course. Spinning 2:45-4am.

DJ Unjust:

I’m not super familiar with Unjust’s sets but she comes very highly recommended from klevervice and Spinoza from the Bunker, on the minimal tip, and does damage. I will be czecking it out. 4-5:15.

Honeychile:

Just added to the bill recently, and another looong time NYC downtown mofo. Currently playing guitar with Apollo Heights, has collab’ed with the great NYC left field producer Badawi (check his 1st LP from the mid 90’s, Honeychile has some great tracks on that), and also has been known to grace the decks at various spots ‘round town, spinning underground new wave, punk, funk, ska, whatever. At this point you’ll be passed out, but I’ll be dancing. From 5:15 til breakfast.

them when then came out, as opposed to ebay. Somebody pass this man a

brainchild of the talented Schwartz bros, Torbitt (aka DJ Lil' Shalamar)
and Wilder (former ace bar slinger at the Milk n Honey, aka the best
drinks in manhattan bar none), chin chin melds jazz, rock, electronics
into a funky melting pot served directly to your shaking ass. Also
featuring folks like Jeremy Wilms (who played for years with free jazz
master Daniel Carter) and Yoshihiro Takemasa (co-leader of Akoya Afrobeat

Broke Revue is no more (I caught them at a Rubulad some time ago) we're
very happy to have him on the bill so expect the real deal rawk and roll.

Jeremy is beyond an aficionado in Jamaican music. He's a fucking guru,
and is responsible for schooling me on many, many, many, did I say this
enough? many dope reggae records, from ska ska ska to gun tunes, the
heaviest dubs and demented michael jackson covers. He's a founder of the
Deadly Dragon Sound System, which is now a shop on 102 Forsyth, go peep
it, or online. The source for quality JA tunes, shop with a shot of
white's overproof rum! 'Every day there's a soundclash/and another sound
get dropped'.

Mike Simo and Catalyst
Jointly responsible for the long running Aerosol Burns parties at Boogaloo
(I missed the legendary Fall show there, unfortunately or fortunately).
Mike runs the ill Troubleman Unlimited label. Who else would would stink
up his station wagon walking dogs for Jersey yuppies so he can put out
albums from groups like Erase Errata and Tussle? Catalyst was one of the
people behind the Happy Birthday Hideout, where Rubulad now resides, great
afterhours freakfests during the evilness of the guilliani’s reign.
Always destroying shit musically. Bring your breakdancing outfit.

y’all have heard enough about me, but my girl? Always repreezentin’,
whether on the decks (check her legendary ‘Thrift On!’ parties), behind
the camera (films featured at both the NY and Chicago film fests),

Since moving from Miami to NY sometime ago, Ursula has been killin’ it,

that’s ILL. His tastes run all over the gamut, but tonight maybe more on
the breakcore-ish ragga jungle side…or not. Who knows.

Back on the scene after chillin’ upstate for a minute, Swingsett is a
loooonnngtime NYC downtown stalwart and someone who I’ve crossed paths
with many many times. Good peoples and good rekkids, from the latest west
London broken beat to vintage jazz grooves. Electronic funk.

Scott Mao and J. Dennis
mild mannered Other Music employees by day, eclectic DJs by night, but
always with a healthy amount of blissful techno, which they’ll be sharing
with you here. Just caught them opening for John Tejada at APT and they

Known for his intuitive ability to carve beats and sounds out of the
bits, Kraddy has made a name for himself from New York to California as a producer and a DJ. He has releases on Bless Records and Muti Music and has recently released his debut album Truth Has No Path on his own label Refiner Records. Kraddy began making a name for himself in SF as a genre twisting DJ with the Stress Collective and released "HiphopJungleHardcore", an unprecedented mix tape that fused the three genres. After Drum and Bass lost its allure Kraddy began to produce more breaks and moody glitchy beats. He hooked up with the Terpsichore Group throwing and playing parties in SF and LA. His new album is an eclectic compilation of work he's done over the past five years.

decidedly more punk/new wave/post-punk set at APT tonight. There will be some Ze and 99 records disco not disco style disco, and lots of classic hip post-punk like Cherry Red and Rough Trade releases and some straight up PUNK and NEW WAVE and some DEVO and so on. So if you consider yourself "cool", you better show up. If you've ever used the phrase "No Wave" in a senence to impress somebody, you better show up. If you ever wanted to hear what all of the bands related to the Pop Group sound like, you betteer show up. If you ever wanted to see what happens when coked up eurotrash stockbrokers come to a swank club to hear house and hip-hop and instead are faced with some weird DIY 7" made with a vacuum cleaner, you should come, please.

Soemthing to do: Tuesdays at Sin Sin starting this week

So yeah, I'm gonna be taking over on tuesdays at Sin Sin from now on. This week is a bit of a test run, since it's a trifle short notice.

Anywho music policy is super lax. I might bring some breaks records but mostly it's gonna be downtempo, nu jazz, soul, funk, broken beat, bossa nova and whatever my guests feel like playing. Basically all the stuff i dont get to play at the rigid breakbeat nights, in essence.

Speaking of guests, Miss Blue Sky is gonna come hang and play records with me for the evening. There might be someone else coming through, will report back when i know.

ALSO speaking of guests, since this is weekly, i have plenty of slots open. Stop by and drop off a cd or at least convince me you're worth booking and ill try to get you in.
